ABAS Series 8

The ABAS Series 8 is a best quality all english over and under sidelock ejector sporting shotgun made to order using the finest steels and timber to produce, mainly by hand, a limited quantity of truly bespoke guns. The gun can be built in 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge in lengths from 25" to 32". There is a choice of chamber length, chokes, type of rib, gun weight, balance, stock blank, measurements and engraving.

The first pair have recently been completed in 16 bore with fine rose & scroll engraving, straight hand stocks and double triggers firing the top barrel first. You can read all about the development of this first pair here, see the complete gallery of images here and in a very rare turn of events, we were given permission to follow the guns being proofed at The Birmingham Proof House and that gallery can be seen here.

The sidelock action or frame is made from case hardening low carbon steel and the size of action is varied for each bore to retain flowing lines so easily lost if reduction from a larger calibre is used. Each component is made from steel of the type most suited to its function. The barrels are constructed using high quality alloy steel utilising chopper lump tubes with the usual options of chamber length and choking. If screw in chokes are preferred we offer the Teague Precision Choke system.

The sidelocks are made to the proven Woodward backwork design and adapted to suit our action. Intercepting safety sears are standard. Pull weight is adjusted to customer requirements. The top lever operates a 'Woodward' type double bite bolt, connected to the hold open top lever by a Scott type squared spindle. The top lever can easily be released to closed position for storage. The action hinges on joint pins and the action draw plates are pinned in place. Both of these are replaceable should re-jointing ever prove to be necessary. Standard firing pins are fitted. There is an automatic safety catch in top strap available with either gold inlaid or carved "Safe". The action is filed and carved with deeply cut beads that extend along the action below the barrel shoulder and double bars beneath in the style of our side by side guns in what we feel is the ultimate in sidelock OU shaping. The classic lines are retained in this slightly rounded version that is very comfortable to use. The amount of "drop" or "gape" is kept to a minimum by utilising the "Nock's Form" small barrel extension that serves only to increase clearance between the top of the breech face and the lower barrel ejecting cartridge. This minimises the size of the action underside gash where the fore end knuckle resides when the gun is fully open.

Double triggers with a single beaded trigger guard in right or left hand are our standard, however a non selective single trigger can be fitted if preferred. It is based on the proven Purdey inertia system and is simple in operation. Most modern O/U guns use a similar system. The Fore-end can be latched with either a push rod or Deeley type catch. the ejector mechanism is housed in the fore-end and uses leaf springs to power the extractors. These feature a large wrap around the rim therefore avoiding the risk of an extractor slipping past a cartridge case, one of the features that attracted us to this design.

Walnut stocks can be selected by customer. Mostly from Turkey (Caucasus), a few blanks come from France, USA or southern U.K. We store all our timber for several years to ensure complete seasoning before use. Grades are five, six or seven star with exhibition stocks when available at extra cost. Straight hand stocks are standard with diamond grip and drop points, a slender Prince of Wales grip with cap or a traditional half pistol grip are optional. Gold oval with initials or crest. Deep, hand rubbed oiled finish with finely cut hand chequering, stocked to the customers measurements for an ideal fit.

Engraving by top freelance engravers to either of our standard styles, fine rose and scroll or heavier cutaway scroll, or game scene, commemorative or special engraving at extra cost. Action finish colour case hardened or gunmetal (Coin). All guns are proved at the Birmingham Proof House. Singles, pairs, triples or sets can be commissioned. Cases, tools and accessories of choice are supplied at extra cost. Gunfitting can be arranged at a nearby shooting school.
